Fish Guts in MakerLab!

Dr. Esther Angert from Cornell University is in the MakerLab this week, working with students from both Cornell and University of Hawaii to study the gut microbes in tropical herbivorous fish.  These fish contribute to carbon cycling in shallow waters and they can only do that with the help of their symbiotic gut bacteria.  One such bacterium is called, Epulopiscium, which means “guest at a banquet of a fish”!

The Hawaii students will next travel back to Cornell with Esther and her students for a 3-week research experience in microbiology.  What an opportunity!
